A Crystal Grill employee has been charged with grand larceny, accused of stealing a purse containing more than $1,000 in cash that had been left on a table at the restaurant.
A review of security footage showed Travis Berry, 24, 314 Hope St., taking the purse as he was cleaning the table. “He didn’t turn the money in to his employer,” said Melvin Andrews, Greenwood police chief of detectives.
According to Andrews, a man and his wife left the Crystal Grill after having just dined there. The wife then discovered that she had left her purse. When the couple arrived at the restaurant to retrieve the forgotten items, the purse was no longer on the table.
Berry had been held for investigation by the Greenwood Police Department since shortly after the incident last Sunday. He was officially charged Thursday.
Berry was already wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections for “absconding supervision,” said MDOC Spokesperson Jasmine Cole.
Berry had been sentenced in 2009 with a non-residential Leflore County burglary. He was paroled in 2014, she said. He had not been notifying his parole officer of his whereabouts.
