Greenwood police are hunting for a suspect in a shooting late Wednesday morning that left a 34-year-old Greenwood man seriously wounded.
Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore declined to release the name of the suspect but said police were in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant for the individual.
“We have a suspect, but we haven’t gotten our hands on him yet,” Moore said.
The victim in the shooting, Alfonzo Hemphill, 34, 315 E. Martin Luther King Drive, was taken to the Greenwood Leflore Hospital before being airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Moore said.
A hospital spokesman was unable to locate records for Hemphill, who reportedly underwent surgery there Wednesday afternoon, but Moore said a family member told detectives that the victim was “doing OK.”
Police responded to a call reporting gunfire along McLaurin Street at about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Moore said.
By the time officers arrived, Hemphill had already been transported to the hospital. Moore said witnesses reported that Hemphill had been standing in a parking lot at 101 W. McLaurin St. when a man on a bicycle began shooting at him.
Moore said Hemphill returned fire at the alleged assailant. The victim’s gun was recovered at the scene; Moore said police have not yet recovered the weapon used by the suspect.
The chief said it appeared that Hemphill was an innocent victim.
“There is nothing in our investigation that says that any charges will be filed against Hemphill at this time,” Moore said. “Of course, this is still under investigation.”
