- Video of Greenwood police car accident
A Greenwood police officer was involved in a one-vehicle accident involving a city police car while returning home Sunday from a weekend training session in Kosciusko, Greenwood Police Chief Henry Purnell said.
Sgt. Melvin Cook was traveling south on Mississippi 19, just outside Kosciusko, around 11:15 a.m. Sunday when his car struck a puddle in the roadway, according to Trooper First Class Tony Dunn, acting public affairs spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s Troop D.
Dunn said after Cook hit the puddle, his late model Ford Crown Victoria hydroplaned, went off the left shoulder of the road and struck a tree.
Cook was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
He was taken to Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko, where he was treated and released.
The police car was totaled, Dunn said.
Purnell said Cook, aside from being a little sore, was back at work Monday.
