Authorities are asking for the public’s help in apprehending a gunman who wounded a Greenwood man in his front yard Sunday night.
“About 8:30 Sunday night, we had an officer who was in the area of Pelican Street. He heard a gunshot and went to investigate,” said Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore.
“When he got on Carrollton Avenue — the 1100 block — an individual flagged the officer down,” the chief said.
The man, identified as Marckettas Baker, 36, told the officer he had been shot once in the hip. Baker was taken to Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville for treatment of his wound. He remained hospitalized this morning. Moore did not have a condition report on him.
Moore said Baker told officers that he saw a black male standing in his yard. According to Baker’s description, the man was wearing dark overalls and a hoodie and had braids in his hair, Moore said.
When Baker demanded the man move on, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot him, Baker told police. The suspect then fled back toward Baptist Town on foot.
Baker told police he didn’t know the suspect. Several other witnesses said they also didn’t recognize the man, the chief said.
Moore is asking anyone with information on the shooter to call the Police Department at 453-3311 or the Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Crime Stoppers Inc. at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
