A 34-year-old Greenwood man is undergoing surgery in Jackson following a shooting near McLaurin Park this morning.
Alfonzo Hemphill, 34, 315 E. Martin Luther King Drive, was taken to the Greenwood Leflore Hospital before being airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he was undergoing surgery as of 4:15 this afternoon, according to Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore.
The chief said police received a call at about 11:45 this morning to report shots fired in the McLaurin Street area.
When officers arrived, witnesses reported that a man on a bicycle had opened fire on Hemphill, who was standing in a parking lot in the area.
Hemphill had already been transported to the hospital by the time officers arrived, Moore said.
Police are seeking a suspect but have not yet made an arrest.
Moore said Hemphill returned fire at the alleged assailant. The victim’s gun was recovered at the scene; Moore said police have not yet recovered the weapon used by the suspect.
Moore declined to identify the suspect. The chief added that police don’t anticipate bringing any charges against Hemphill, though he said the investigation is ongoing.
