A Greenwood man has been charged with drug possession following a Saturday night foot chase with officers.
Jerrance Jones, 36, 337 W. Adams Ave., has been charged with one count of possession of Schedule II drugs and one count of crystal meth.
Bond was set at $50,000 for the Schedule II drug charge and $50,000 for the crystal meth. Bond for the additional misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct was set at $1,500.
Jones bonded out and was released from jail.
Police Chief Ray Moore said officers stopped a Chevrolet sedan in the 200 block of McLaurin Street for running a stop sign. After the vehicle was stopped, Jones jumped out of it and fled on foot, the chief said.
Officers apprehended Jones a short time later, Moore said.
After being placed in custody, Jones told officers he could not breathe, so he was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital by ambulance, the chief said. Upon being released from the hospital, Jones was placed back in police custody.
After examining the vehicle, officers found what was described as “a quantity” of Schedule II drugs and crystal meth in the car, Moore said.
The investigation is continuing.
This is not the first encounter between Jones and the department.
In 2009, Jones filed a $5 million lawsuit, claiming he was pistol-whipped and Maced during an arrest at his home following a routine traffic stop. The lawsuit named Officer Terrance Craft, former Police Chief Henry Harris and former Mayor Sheriel Perkins as defendants.
The suit was dismissed for lack of probable cause, according to Moore.
