A Greenwood man died Saturday after being shot in the street during a dispute with another man who had children by the same woman, Police Chief Henry Purnell said.
Jeffery Johnson, 32, 1301 Mississippi Ave., was pronounced dead at 12:22 Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Purnell said.
However, the chief said Johnson was able to tell officers who shot him before dying, and witnesses also identified the shooter as Dan McGill Jr., 30, 208 Nichols St. Purnell said police were searching for McGill Saturday.
It’s Greenwood’s second homicide of 2011.
Johnson had been shot once in the left chest area in the 400 block of College Street, which is near Davis Elementary School.
Police received a call about the shooting at 11:33 Saturday morning.
Purnell said Johnson had gone to see a woman on College Street with whom he has children. The chief said McGill, who also has children by the same woman, showed up, and McGill and Johnson had a conflict in the street.
Johnson ran around his vehicle, and McGill fired four shots, hitting Johnson once in the left side, Purnell said. The bullet exited out the front, the chief said.
Johnson was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital but did not survive.
Purnell said McGill is wanted for murder. Anyone who has seen him should contact the Police Department at 453-5312 or Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Crime Stoppers Inc. at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
