A 24-year-old Greenwood man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of another man on Saturday.
Duncan
Greenwood police charged Tavarus Duncan, 1301 Mississippi Ave., Apt. 2, in the killing of Swanson Outlaw, 29, after Duncan turned himself in around 11 a.m. Sunday, according to a statement released by the police.
Duncan’s bond was set at $100,000. As of Monday afternoon he was still in the Leflore County Jail.
Police Chief Jody Bradley said Outlaw was in his vehicle when he was shot and lost control, causing him to drive through the Greenwood Housing Authority’s gated fence and crash into a small brick building under the Housing Authority’s tower at the corner of Jackson and Howard streets. It’s unclear if Outlaw was shot while driving or parked in his vehicle and then shot, the chief said.
Bradley said his department had received numerous phone calls from the community about the shooting.
“I am very proud of how the Police Department, with the support of the community, came together to capture a criminal,” he said. “This is an example of how we can work together to make our community better for all.”
Outlaw’s death is the seventh homicide of the year in Leflore County. The investigation into the county’s previous homicide, that of Eric Haslett, which also involved a firearm and occurred midday April 25 on Henderson Street, is ongoing.
Both Outlaw’s and Haslett’s deaths occurred in the area of Crestview Homes, a housing complex.
