The father of a Greenwood 2-year-old is in custody after allegedly delivering a beating that sent the girl to the hospital.
Robert Lee Jones, 28, of Jackson, has been charged with domestic violence and aggravated assault.
Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore said authorities have been investigating the case since December, when Jones’ 2-year-old daughter was admitted to the Greenwood Leflore Hospital with serious injuries that indicated she had been beaten.
A social worker at the hospital notified the police, who began investigating the girl’s injuries, Moore said.
The girl was transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for further treatment and then released. Moore said she’s now being looked after in a foster home.
Moore said it appeared that the abuse was ongoing but that authorities were notified only after the child was taken to the hospital.
The chief said that photographs of the girl’s injuries included in the case file were disturbing and that the alleged crime was particularly upsetting.
“This is one of the times when it’s absolutely heartbreaking that a child could be put in that predicament,” Moore said. “It just tears you up. You can’t understand how anybody could do that to a child.”
