A body found in Eupora has been identified as a 53-year-old Greenwood man.
Charles McDaniel was discovered Wednesday morning about 300 feet off Mississippi 9, said Eupora Police Chief Greg Hunter.
Findings show that the body could have been there for at least two days.
“It’s not a very busy area where he was,” Chief Hunter said.
Coroner Steve Wells said he hadn’t figured out what caused McDaniel’s death yet, but said the autopsy showed no signs of foul play. The official determination of the cause will take weeks or even months, he said.
Wells said “our best guess” is that McDaniel was probably attempting to walk to Greenwood from Columbus, where he was most recently living, and eventually succumbed to the heat.
Wells said they could only speculate that that was what he was doing, since Eupora is about halfway between the two cities.
“We don’t know if he’d been hitchhiking or had walked the whole way,” Wells said.
Greenwood is just over 100 miles from Columbus.
There were no personal belongings found with McDaniel. He was identified through fingerprinting, Wells said.
