A post-wedding gathering late Saturday night led to an Itta Bena man being charged with aggravated assault.
Rashad Antrey Williams, 19, 342 Mitchell St., remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning.
Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said Williams attended the wedding and the gathering on Morris Street in Itta Bena. The department received the call at 11:30 p.m.
When Williams’ brother, Roy, began to engage in horseplay with a friend, Lamarcus Conley, Williams mistakenly thought the two were fighting, Banks said.
Williams pulled a handgun, and a struggle between the three men ensued, he said. Conley was shot in the neck, and Roy Williams was shot in the hand, Banks said.
“It went through and through,” the sheriff said, in describing the extent of Conley’s wounds.
Conley was taken to a hospital in Greenville and was then airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Banks said when he checked on Conley he was listed in stable condition. The medical center said this morning that Conley was not listed on its public patient registry.
Roy Williams was treated for his gunshot wound at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, the sheriff said.
Banks said he didn’t know the names of the bride and groom from the wedding.
Following the shooting, Williams fled. It is believed that he then shot rounds through a car and a church about three blocks away from the gathering, Banks said.
Unlike the handgun used at the wedding gathering, the weapon used in the car and church shooting fired a 7.62mm rifle cartridge, several rounds of which were found at the scene, the sheriff said. No one was in the car or church at the time of the shooting, he said.
A search of Williams’ car found the box for a two-handed semi-automatic handgun that fires the 7.62 round, Banks said.
Although they have not recovered the weapon, Banks said, “we got a picture from Facebook of him holding it.”
The investigation is continuing.
