Greenwood detectives are still investigating to see what might have prompted a late-night stabbing of an apparently sleeping victim Friday.
Jerr Dantzler, 23, told police he was visiting family friends at 701 2nd Ave. North in Greenwood on Friday night. He fell asleep on the couch, with headphones on listening to the radio, and woke up with another man on top of him wielding a knife.
The 22-year-old suspect then allegedly stabbed Dantzler in the right shoulder.
The suspect was arrested by police on Saturday but had not been charged as of this morning.
Lt. Ray Moore of the Greenwood Police Department said Dantzler was treated and released at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Dantzler lists addresses in Ellisville and Jackson. Moore was unsure which address is current.
Moore said it was also unclear if the suspect lived in the house where Dantzler was staying. The suspect listed that address as well as another elsewhere in Greenwood.
The suspect is being held at the Leflore County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault. The Commonwealth generally does not publish the names of suspects until they have been charged.
Moore said detectives interviewed the victim but have not yet had a chance to speak with the suspect in the stabbing.
Dantzler told police he didn’t know the other man well and had no idea what might have motivated the attack.
“They didn’t have an altercation or anything,” Moore said.
Although Dantzler has not pressed charges as of this morning, Moore said he thought police already have enough to proceed with the formal accusation of a crime against the suspect.
“Based on everything I’m looking at on the report, he will be charged,” Moore said.
