A Greenwood couple has been arrested in connection with Sunday night’s armed robbery of a convenience store.
Husband and wife Willie, 30, and Amanda Hemphill, 32, 1206 Clay St., have each been charged with one count of being an accessory after the fact in the robbery at Triple Stop on Mississippi 430.
Milton Lee Gilbert, 24, 109 Ainsworth St., already has been charged with armed robbery.
Willie Hemphill is Gilbert’s cousin. According to Sheriff Ricky Banks, the couple allowed Gilbert to hide in their residence at Bishop Apartments as the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department searched for him.
When deputies asked to search the residence, the couple refused, Sheriff Banks said. “As the deputy sheriff was negotiating getting into the home, Gilbert hopped out the back window and ran into the woods,” he said.
The Sheriff’s Department then sealed the house off and took the couple into custody.
Willie Hemphill is alleged to have known Gilbert’s plan. Gilbert claimed that he gave Hemphill the gun used to rob the store and the stolen money, Banks said.
Gilbert’s clothing that he had worn when robbing the store was recovered in the Hemphills’ home.
The gun and the money have not been found. Banks said the case is still under investigation.
