Authorities are investigating a motive behind Wednesday’s nighttime shooting of a Greenwood Country Club employee.
Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said Thursday that he does not think it has any connection to the club.
“We are getting a lot of information from the public, and we are working on it right now,” he said.
Demetrus Davis, 24, was shot outside the country club at around 9 p.m. Wednesday, after the club had closed for the evening and only some staff remained on the premises.
According to Banks, Davis was shot in the leg and groin area as well as the neck.
It is unclear what Davis, a member of the kitchen staff, was doing outside in the parking lot, but Banks said he allegedly fired shots back. No one else was injured in the shooting.
Davis was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was in good condition Thursday afternoon, according to a UMMC spokeswoman.
On his Facebook page, Davis uses the nickname “Dime A Dozen,” but there have been no public postings to it since Sept. 18.
There were no arrests on the Leflore County Jail docket for shooting-related incidents this morning, but Banks said Thursday that there is at least one suspect.
On Thursday afternoon, the club sent out an email to its members that said the shooting “was unrelated to club operations” but as a precaution the club would close at sundown while the Sheriff’s Department’s investigation is pending.
The notice said that lunch service and tennis and golf operations would continue as normal.
Mary Garrard, the manager of the club, said the decision to temporarily scale back its hours of operation was made by Alan Ellis, president of the club’s board of directors.
“We don’t know anything, and when you don’t know anything you don’t want to take any chances,” Garrard said.
Ellis could not be reached for comment this morning.
