New Year’s Eve, a time usually associated with drinking and debauchery, was a quiet night in Greenwood, says Deputy Police Chief Johnny Langdon.
No shooting was reported, and there weren’t as many arrests as in other years, he said.
“We didn’t have a lot of people out there,” he said. “It may have been because of the weather.”
On the highways it was another story.
Sgt. Ben Williams, a public information officer for Troop D, said troopers in the district wrote 449 moving violation tickets between Friday and midnight Tuesday.
During that time, troopers wrote 246 non-moving-violation tickets and made 26 DUI-related arrests. There were also two drug arrests and two felony arrests during the extended holiday.
“In the state, we were third for moving violations and third for DUI arrests,” said Williams.
There are nine districts total.
Williams said the numbers for the district were consistent with previous years.
Statewide, there were 3,517 moving violations, 2,566 non-moving violations and 162 DUI arrests.
At least 10 people were killed on state highways during the holiday period, and more than two dozen were injured, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Johnny Poulos.
