Greenwood police have discovered no evidence of a physical attack on the 33-year-old woman whose body was discovered early Thursday outside the downtown post office.
Chief Ray Moore said that although rumors have been flying around town speculating on the cause of death of Connie Delaune, a preliminary external examination of her body at the funeral home, where she was being prepared for autopsy, showed no gunshot wounds, no stab wounds and no wounds that would indicate struggle or an attack. Nor was there evidence at the scene, he said, indicating that she had been dragged to or placed at the spot where her body was found.
The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy at the Mississippi Crime Lab.
Delaune was found deceased between the hedges and the building at the corner of Walthall and Washington streets.
A postal worker arriving for work discovered her lying there and called police at about 6:15 a.m. Thursday.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said Delaune had been dead for several hours when her body was discovered.
Moore said police had information indicating Delaune lived in Greenwood but “from what we understand, she didn’t have a permanent place of residence.”
Delaune’s Facebook page, which had not been posted on since 2017, indicated she lived in Greenwood where she was self-employed and had professional cooking skills.
Moore said the investigation into what happened is ongoing.
The chief asked that anyone with information about Delaune or the scene at the post office call the police station at 453-3311.
