CARROLLTON — Two men were arrested in Carroll County on felony drug charges in two separate incidents over the weekend, Sheriff Jerry Carver said.
Brian Sanders, 30, of Vaiden was stopped in Vaiden on Saturday night after a deputy noticed a missing tag light, Carver said. When the deputy signaled with his light for Sanders to stop, he continued to drive for a time until another deputy assisted in stopping him. While looking into the vehicle, deputies noticed a strong odor of what smelled like marijuana, Carver said.
Several people were in the vehicle, and the deputy observed a gun on the passenger side, he said.
“We cleared the vehicle and found a bag containing a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, some multi-colored tablets and $260 in cash,” Carver said.
Sanders was charged with improper equipment, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. He was being held at the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility awaiting a hearing before Judge Dorothy Branch this morning.
Charles Alton Johnson, 31, of Indianola was arrested early Saturday in North Carrollton, Carver said.
“The deputy noticed a faded tag and ran the number. It was expired,” Carver said. “As he was talking to the driver, he noticed a marijuana grinder and two small bags of a green leafy substance. (Johnson) told the deputy he had been smoking about an hour before he was pulled over. When he searched the car, the deputy found ‘ice,’ which is crystal meth.”
Johnson will be charged with a misdemeanor for the small amount of marijuana, improper equipment, and felony possession of a controlled substance.
Johnson was jailed and was scheduled to make an initial appearance before Judge Jimmy Avant this morning.
