Shootings early Saturday and early today have left two Greenwood men injured, including one in critical condition.
The first was at the 1300 block of Roosevelt Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, when a passerby was hit by a bullet apparently not aimed at him.
The second was at the Scott station at Claiborne Avenue and U.S. 82 at around 2:30 a.m. today.
In the shooting at the Scott store, an armed robber gunned down a bystander and stole a bag full of money, according to Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore.
The victim, 20-year-old Dekerus Williams, was airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he has since undergone surgery and was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, Moore said.
A paper bag containing money believed to have been stolen in the robbery was recovered and a suspect was taken into custody without incident, Moore said. The suspect has not been named at this time, as formal charges have not yet been filed. Moore said charges were expected to be made this afternoon or early Tuesday.
In the Saturday morning incident on Roosevelt, police found a white Nissan Maxima with its passenger glass and rear glass shot out, according to the police report. The vehicle is being combed for evidence. Police found bags of what was believed to be marijuana, as well as money and a scattering of shell casings around the car.
The gunshot victim, whose name was not disclosed, was standing up the street from the car and was hit by a stray bullet. An acquaintance took him to the hospital before police arrived.
The victim told police he saw the men shooting at one another and saw one male subject running from the scene. He did not see what happened to the second gunman.
Moore said the two incidents are not related and are being investigated separately.
