Two suspects in aggravated assault and armed robbery cases in Leflore County have been arraigned.
Both were out on bond and relinquished to custody of the Sheriff’s Department to assure they appeared in court for their arraignments.
Ricky Adams, 37, of Greenwood was charged with two counts of armed robbery and one charge of aggravated assault in incidents that occurred in June.
In one incident, Adams was arrested and charged with a shooting at the Big Star grocery on Cotton Street in which a customer was wounded. Adams was also charged in an incident at the Triple Stop on Humphrey Highway, also during the summer.
Jacobi Mallett, 16, also of Greenwood, was arrested in June and charge with four counts of aggravated assault. Mallett was charged as an adult because a firearm was involved.
Mallett and three others were charged in an incident at Wagner subdivision on June 24 in which one person was shot and several others were shot at.
“Both men will be placed on the trial docket for the next subsequent term in Circuit Court,” Undersheriff Ken Spencer said.
Spencer said both suspects were picked up on indictments from earlier charges to assure their appearance in court to face formal charges.
“If someone bonds out on a felony charge, they have stipulations they have to follow,” Spencer explained. “Wherever they go, they have to be in contact with that bondsman. His primary responsibility is to ensure that person will appear in court.”
If the bond company has doubts about that person’s compliance, Spencer said, “they can get off the bond, which generally puts them right back into custody.”
If indicted suspects fail to appear in court, the judge has discretion to relinquish bond and order that they be placed in custody. If bond is relinquished, once a suspect is arraigned, he or she can remain incarcerated until the court date or could possibly post bond with another company.
Both Adams and Mallett are currently in the Leflore County Jail, awaiting trial.
