The Holmes County Sheriff’s Department is searching for two Greenwood men who have been identified as suspects in a recent fatal shooting in Cruger.
Jamar Newsome, 32, 101 Star Street, and Demantreous Demond Love, 37, 706 3rd Ave. N., are wanted on charges of aggravated assault, robbery and capital murder.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s Department received a tip this week that the two suspects were last seen at a gas station on U.S. 49 in Greenwood, Holmes County authorities said.
In the early hours of July 2, two armed men entered Club CJ’s in Cruger, and shot Vernardo Washington and Joe Holmes. Both men received several wounds. A third man was present but was said to be unarmed, witnesses said.
Based on witness reports, the motive appeared to be armed robbery, said Holmes County Sheriff Willie March.
Washington was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he later died from his wounds. Holmes was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was released from the hospital on July 18.
The first of the three suspects was picked up by the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department and taken into custody on July 3.
Perez Love, 33, 105 East Taft St., was identified by witnesses at the club to authorities.
“In a few days, we had Perez in custody,” March said. “We knew what the other two looked like but didn’t know their names.”
Love has been charged with capital murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault. He had an initial appearance in court, but a hearing date has yet to be set. He remains in the Holmes County Jail with no bond.
March said a warrant for the other two suspects was released July 27 after witnesses from the nightclub identified them in a photograph lineup.
Both the Greenwood Police Department and the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department have been assisting with the investigation.
