Two single-car accidents on Sunday morning in Montgomery County led to the deaths of a Grenada teenager and the mother of a Tupelo teenager.
Seventeen-year-old Robert Crisman “Trey” Campbell III of Grenada was killed at around 4 a.m. Sunday when his Jeep SUV left Mississippi 407 and crashed into a tree.
Campbell was traveling south on the state highway, just north of Herring School Road, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. First responders were dispatched at around 4 a.m.
Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Ronnie Shive said Campbell’s vehicle collided with a tree on its driver’s side, instantly killing Campbell, who was traveling alone.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Allan Pratt. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Winona Fire Department and MedStat emergency medical services also responded to the scene.
Campbell was a senior at Winona Christian School, where this morning a volunteer answering the phone said nearly everyone at the school was attending Campbell’s funeral.
A gathering at the school’s gymnatorium will be held this afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m.
Also on Sunday morning, the Highway Patrol responded to a second fatal accident in Montgomery County that claimed the life of a Tupelo resident.
An unnamed teenager, 17, was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer eastbound on U.S. 82 and lost control of the vehicle at around 9:30 a.m.
A Highway Patrol initial report indicated the vehicle exited the highway and the driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to enter the median and overturn.
The driver’s mother, Erica T. Walls, 39, of Tupelo, a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to a hospital in Tupelo with moderate injuries.
Both accidents remain under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
