Reverse racism
I am responding to the editorial of Dec. 22 (“Reverse racism from Dorothy Glenn”).
First, Councilwoman Glenn is not on the Greenwood City Council to represent the majority on the council. We don’t all see things the same way or think alike.
Secondly, the city of Greenwood’s racist mindset has not and will never change.
I think the reason individuals were selected from each ward initially was because Blacks had no representation on certain city boards, and wards were either majority Black or majority white. At that time, most wards were not racially mixed. Now Wards 1, 2 and 3 are mixed for sure.
Give me one instance in which a Black was selected by a white council member in Wards 1 or 2, both about 90% white, for anything. No, they don’t say, “Why don’t you select someone like me?” They just appoint someone who looks like them. The discussions are never public.
The editorial mentioned qualifications. I don’t believe that the appointee is the only qualified person in the ward. What I hear from all of this is that we are not qualified to speak for and represent ourselves. It’s an insult to the residents of Andrew Powell’s ward.
Do you also think Blacks should not have a voice? Have you ever wondered if there is a Black qualified in the ward?
It is about race, but it is also about character. Thank you for your honesty, Councilwoman Glenn.

Sue Anna Joe’s letter
It was refreshing and heart-warming to read the letter to the editor from Sue Anna Joe (“Letting friendship die is cause for regret,” Dec. 23).
She described the experiences of many in their lives and gave some very valuable advice.
I thank her for the inspiring letter.
Avalon zip code
Why on earth does Avalon, a small hamlet located miles from Greenwood that may have 10 residents, have the same zip code as Greenwood, 38930, especially considering that Greenwood, a town with only about 14,000 inhabitants, has two zip codes?

Editor’s note: Avalon used to have its own zip code, but after its post office closed years ago, it was assigned Greenwood’s zip code, as we recall.
