Pillow Academy’s 2022 season came to an end Friday afternoon in a 6-0 make-up game loss to Magnolia Heights at Coleman Field in Utroska Park.
The contest was the completion of a game on April 12 in Senatobia that was stopped by rain in the second inning. The Chiefs served as the home team.
Nelson Hodges and Elliott Flowers had base hits for the Mustangs, who close with an 8-18 overall mark and a 2-11 record in District 1-5A play.
Drew Lamb (0-4), who started the game on April 12 and surrendered two runs on four hits, takes the loss. Hodges worked 11/3, walking three and fanning one. He allowed three runs.
In one of the wildest games of the season, the Mustangs dropped a 13-10 nine-inning decision to Washington School Thursday. The contest, which started at 4 p.m., lasted for over three hours.
In what was supposed to be a doubleheader, the second contest was called in the top of the first because of a power failure with some of the lights at the field. The Generals led 1-0 and had the bases loaded when umpires met with coaches and made the decision to call the game.
“It was their call,” said PA head coach Jud Thigpen. “The lights that were working were enough for us to keep playing.”
In Game 1 Thursday, Washington scored three runs in the top of the ninth to pull out the win. The Generals started off with a three-run first, and tacked on one run in the second, four in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Pillow plated two in the first, four in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh to tie the game at 10-10.
Lamb started on the mound for Pillow, going 51/3 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits, walking six and fanning five.
Flowers (0-2) was tagged with the loss as he went 31/3 innings, yielding five runs on three hits, walking three and striking out two. Trace Schmitz got the final out but not before allowing two hits.
Dayne Sanford belted his eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. He also had a single and double, drove in three runs and scored once.
Chamberlain McClain had two singles and scored one run, and Hodges had a single, RBI and scored twice. JC Garrard had an RBI single and scored a run, and Perry Smith had a single and RBI. Brock Makamson and Lamb had a single each, and Flowers had an RBI and scored two runs.
