Editor, Commonwealth:
The leaders in this town never cease to amaze me. They are filming a TV series in North Greenwood about the struggle of black women. Not only did we not live in that section of town, we weren’t allowed in that section after dark.
But I guess they wanted to give the impression that blacks are free to do as other races. Not only is that not true here, it’s not true in other parts of the world that I know of, and that includes Africa. I guess we should be excited that we are no longer slaves. Again, that depends on your definition of slavery.
Our problems will never be solved until we face the ugly past and deal with it in a humanizing way. It’s time we take the blinders off and face the truth. Yes, it’s painful and ugly, but that’s no reason for us to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that the healing is complete. Sometimes I wonder if it has started for many. I do realize that all people are not racist and hateful, yet so many are, and that includes all races.
Young people, it’s time to stop buying into everything you see and hear on social media because so much of that information is untrue. Learn about your history from your people. Your seniors can tell and teach you more than will ever be put in a book. Learn to think for yourself and stop allowing others and social media to control your mind. Sharpen your reading skills by reading. The people who put together most of the computer programs do not allow their own children to use them until they are teenagers or older. Yet some kind of technology is the babysitter for most children, and you wonder why they can’t read, spell or write a complete sentence.
It’s also time for our school’s administrators to allow the teachers to command their classrooms. Not all children learn at the same rate. That’s why so many of our children are behind. I realize that the system is designed to make sure our babies will not succeed. Too many of our children started getting jobs that were once reserved for the children of the elite.
Divide and conquer always has been and always will be. It’s up to us to become conquerors. Learn to love yourself and your fellow man. You just might enjoy life better.
