GHS, Elzy, JZ George bow out of playoffs

The 2026 prep baseball seasons for Greenwood, Amanda Elzy and J.Z. George high schools all came to an end over the weekend in their respective MHSAA state tournaments.

The Pillow Academy fishing team just completed the regular season of its schedule at an event at the Ross Barnett Reservoir last weekend. They had five boats in the water, which had students and volunteer coaches in each. The team will now compete in the Mississippi State Championships on May 16 at Ross Barnett. Members of the team are, front from left, Brooke Baugh (coach & captain), Hodges Valente, Tom Baugh (captain), Landon Atkinson, Jack Sims, Schaefer Hodges, Heath Hodges (captain), Reeves Jordan, Jackie Sims (captain), back row, Charlie Dunn and Aiden Valente. Not pictured are Nicholas O’Neal (captain) and Jack O’Neal. The team competed in five tournaments in the regular season.

Those who follow my work know that I have a fondness for plants that support the pollinator population. When they’re also showstoppers, that’s a win-win for me.
If you’re looking for bold color and serious pollinator power, you’re going to love two plants that caught my eye on a recent visit to The Flower Bed Nursery in Lumberton.

J.Z. George advances to second round

The J.Z. George High School girls fast-pitch softball team is headed to the second round of the MHSAA North 2A playoffs.
The Lady Jags disposed of Kemper County Friday night, as they defeated the Lady Wildcats 19-4 in the first game of the best-of-three series. Kemper opted not to play the second contest and forfeited to J.Z. George.
