Bloody weekend sees double homicide and murder-suicide

Four people are dead following two separate, unrelated shootings in Leflore County over the weekend.
On Friday night in Itta Bena, two men were killed in a spray of gunfire aimed at the vehicle in which they were sitting.

Man charged in fatal highway shooting

A Greenwood man has been charged in a highway shooting last month that killed an 18-year-old Amanda Elzy High School graduate and injured his brother.
Police Chief Terrence Craft said Taighe Stewart, 29, 104 Country Club Drive, was arrested and charged Monday with murder and aggravated assault.

Man sentenced to life for murder

A Greenwood man will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to the kidnapping and murder of his ex-girlfriend in 2020.
Darriel Gilbert, 53, received the sentence following his guilty plea on Friday in Leflore County Circuit Court, according to a release from District Attorney Dewayne Richardson.

Brittany Thompson, 22, of Greenwood was reported missing last Friday and has not been seen since Wednesday, according to the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department.
