2-time candidate charged with child molestation

A former candidate for the Leflore County Board of Supervisors has been charged with child molestation.
Derrick Chambers, 61, 112 Downing Drive, turned himself in to the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department Monday morning in compliance with a warrant that was issued for his arrest. He posted $50,000 bond and was released.

Defective sewer line shuts down Greenwood Leflore Hospital

Greenwood Leflore Hospital was discharging or transferring to various hospitals all of its inpatients on Monday due to a sewage line issue affecting hospital operations.
The patients were being transferred based on bed availability, said hospital spokeswoman Christine Hemphill.

Greenwood High School running back Jawuan Gideon put together one of his better games of the 2025 season in last week’s 32-10 win over Gentry High School.
For his efforts, the senior tailback has been selected as one of the Commonwealth’s Players of the Week.

2 accused of tossing cremains in trash during burglary attempt

Two people have been accused of throwing cremated human remains into a garbage can during a burglary attempt.
Shemekia Williams, 37, and Sedrick Roby, 40, were arrested Friday in connection to the incident and charged with burglary and desecration of human remains.
The incident occurred on Feb. 23.
