Former Pillow student killed in accident

A Belzoni high school student who formerly lived in Greenwood and attended Pillow Academy was killed in a car accident on Friday.
Lane McLellan, 17, was a senior at Humpheys Academy.
McLellan is “going to be severely missed,” said the academy’s headmaster, Joe Taylor.

Officials with the Franciscan religious order announced Friday that St. Francis School, due to declining enrollment and increasing budget deficits, will be permanently shuttered after school lets out May 20.

St. Francis School is closing after more than 70 years

Greenwood’s only Catholic school will be closing after more than 70 years of operation.
When St. Francis of Assisi School concludes its school year on May 20, it will be permanently shuttering an institution that has been educating mostly Black and Hispanic children since 1951.

Board of Supervisors dumps Gary as county administrator

Leflore County Chancery Clerk Johnny Gary Jr. is out as county administrator.
On Tuesday, the first meeting of a new term, the county Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to instead appoint longtime Tax Assessor Leroy Ware to serve as the interim county administrator while it advertises for a permanent replacement.
