Man struck by vehicle, killed

An Itta Bena man is dead after being struck by a vehicle over the weekend.
Leflore County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Bill Staten said that Dextrice Cross, 32, was killed at 12:36 a.m. Saturday on Freedom Street in Itta Bena.
The driver was 37-year-old Alexis Weathers of Itta Bena.

Council approves McDowell as fire chief

The Greenwood City Council has approved Martrellis McDowell as the city’s new fire chief.
McDowell, who has been with the Fire Department since 1995, was approved unanimously Tuesday. He succeeds Marcus Banks, who was dismissed last month on Mayor Kenderick Cox’s first day in office.

ROLLING FORK (AP) — Emergency officials in Mississippi said 23 people have been killed by tornadoes that tore through the state on Friday night, destroying buildings and knocking out power as severe weather that produced hail the size of golf balls moved through several southern states.
