Turnrow Books heavily damaged by fire

A fire brought a sad story Wednesday night to Turnrow Book Co.
While firefighters worked to contain the blaze to the two-story bookstore, employees and patrons gathered in the nearby city parking lot, stunned by the loss, at least temporarily, of a major Greenwood cultural institution.

State Sen. David Jordan displays the “Drum Major for Justice Award” given to him by the Steering Committee for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19. The award name comes from a phrase King used in 1968, two months before his assassination. The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
