Mississippi’s bureaucrats are out of control -- that is the finding of a new report that looks at 222 state government bureaucracies.
Only 5% of the agencies and boards reviewed are headed by a directly elected official. The state Senate only confirms a small minority of appointees to other key positions.

Man slain in his driveway

A Greenwood man was killed by gunfire in his driveway Friday afternoon near Greenwood High School.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders confirmed the death of 44-year-old Doniel Nellum.
The shooting happened at about 2:30 p.m. at 609 Mimosa Street.
Nellum would have turned 45 years old in February.

Man faces charges in shootout

A Leflore County man has been charged with one count of murder and three counts of aggravated assault in connection with a 2023 shootout.
Antonio Whitehall, 19, 36901 County Road 507, was arrested Friday night by the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department.
