Group captures nearly 12-foot-long alligator

Gator hunting is not for the faint of heart.
A group from the Greenwood area learned how intense the sport can be after capturing an almost 12-foot alligator in the Yazoo River on Saturday.

The 18th annual Bikes, Blues & Bayous ride provided riders with flat roads, Southern hospitality and a welcomed break from scorching temperatures.
Beth Stevens, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce, said the event “went wonderfully.”

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
