Police Chief Terrence Craft provided this photo of two guns that were allegedly in the possession of two minor children Thursday. Craft is asking for greater awareness about safely storing guns and ammunition, especially after a 3-year-old accidentally shot himself earlier this year with an unsecured firearm.

Chief: Kids’ access to guns is increasing

On Thursday afternoon, Greenwood police received a call from a concerned citizen who said two children had been seen playing with and shooting firearms.
An officer made contact with a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old outside the Gilliam Head Start Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Greenwood Miss Hospitality Ali Hargett, 18, will represent Greenwood in the 76th Mississippi Miss Hospitality Competition at the Historic Hattiesburg Saenger Theater July 18-19. Hargett will be one of 47 women representing all regions throughout the state competing at this year’s event.

John Grantham II

Services for John Grantham II of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Carrollton, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Lizzie Sanders Memorial Chapel. Mr. Grantham, 42, died Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Pope. He was a flex driver for Amazon. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the services. There will be no viewing after the eulogy.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
