Building honoring Hurt to be unveiled

More than a year after the home site of the Mississippi John Hurt Museum burned down, a new building dedicated in honor of the Carroll County-raised blues musician will be unveiled during this weekend’s Mississippi John Hurt Homecoming Festival.

Carroll Academy head coach Tommy Acy is keeping his fingers crossed his team can bounce back from last week’s 40-13 loss at Winston Academy.
The Rebels will be at home Friday as they host Greenville St. Joe for the MAIS District 2-2A championship. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Gordan Field in Carrollton.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
