Christmas morning would find my sister and me rushing through the hallway into the den hoping that Santa had left a multitude of toys, firecrackers, candies, and nuts. The excitement couldn’t be contained and on most of these mornings, Pop would snap a couple photos capturing the expressions on our faces.

GLCSD: Sanders named athletic director

The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District has named Latonya Sanders as its new athletic director, replacing Clinton Gatewood, who is now an assistant superintendent in the school system.

Services for Jo Ann Smith of Greenwood will be at noon Saturday at Monument of Grace Church.
Ms. Smith, 55, died Monday, April 21, 2025, at her home.
She worked at Milwaukee Tool.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Century Funeral Home.
Bishop L.J. Johnson will officiate at the services.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
