MegaFest school supply giveaway set for Aug. 3 at Civic Center

Get “Ready to Rise” at this year’s Back to School MegaFest.
The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Andrew McQueen Jr. Civic Center, which is one of the event’s new co-sponsors this year.
This is the fourth annual event.

A memorial service for Eloise Sample was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Andrew McQueen Jr. Civic Center.
Mrs. Sample, 92, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025, at Riverview Nursing and Rehab Center in Greenwood.
She was retired from Mississippi Action for Progress Inc.

James L. McGee

Services for James L. McGee of Greenwood will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. McGee, 99, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025, at his daughter’s home in Greenwood.
He was a retired lawn and garden worker and a World War II veteran.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the church.

Jackson Mayor John Horhn has selected Dr. RaShall Brackney to be the new police chief of Jackson.
Most of Brackney’s career, 30 years, was in the Pittsburgh Police Bureau. She later served as chief of campus police at George Washington University and, most recently, police chief in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
