Supervisors commit $100K more for Itta Bena storm recovery

Power has been restored to nearly all of Itta Bena, as the city has received a second funding commitment from the Leflore County Board of Supervisors.
District 4 Supervisor Eric Mitchell said at Monday’s board meeting that 95% of Itta Bena had power, but work had been halted because funds were depleted.

Senior pageant queens coming to town

Greenwood is set to host senior pageantry queens for performances this week for the third year.
Eight pageant queens, ages 50 to 85, from Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas will be in town. The meet-and-greet will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the lobby of The Alluvian and is open to the public at no charge.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
