GLUCKSTADT, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi city has named its first police chief.
After a thorough hiring process and a number of interviews, the Board of Alderman unanimously voted last week for Cmdr. Wendell Watts to lead its police department, WLBT-TV reported.
“As the Chief, I plan on partnering with our community and will be dedicated to preventing and controlling crime and preserving the quality of life in Gluckstadt through firm, fair, and impartial law enforcement strategies,” Watts said. “I am committed to securing the public’s trust by maintaining professionalism in every aspect of our operations and demanding the highest levels of personal and professional integrity of our officers.”
The Board of Aldermen will ratify Watts' hiring at public meeting on March 8. Once ratified, Mayor Walter Morrison will serve as Watts' direct Supervisor.
Watts currently serves as a watch commander for the Madison Police Department as well as director of security for a large security unit at Merit Health. He began his law enforcement career with the Jackson Police Department in 1992 and has served in several roles including precinct sergeant, detective sergeant and commander for the Special Operations Division.
Gluckstadt, incorporated last June, is located 17 miles (27 kilometers) north of Jackson.
