There has been a lot said lately about putting more of the emphasis around Memorial Day on its origin of honoring the war dead and less on its marking the start of summer activities.
Maybe both should be the goal.
A three-day weekend in late May is a wonderful time for family and friends to get together, such as will happen Saturday at the I’m So Greenwood family day in Whittington Park.
But come Monday, Americans should take time out from their fun, even if it’s for just a few minutes, to think about those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, giving of their lives in service to this great country.
Without their sacrifice, there would be much less to celebrate about our nation.
