A Greenwood man is recovering from several injuries after being struck in a hit-and-run by a motorist last Friday.
Police Chief Terrence Craft said Curtis Wiggins, a barber at Main Street Barber Shop, was riding his bike at about 8:30 p.m. last Friday when he was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of West Claiborne Avenue and Dionyse Street.
The suspect, James Michael Mims, was arrested Tuesday and is out on $20,000 bond. Mims, 41, 20635 County Road 522, Minter City, has been charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, a felony charge.
Craft said Wiggins’ injuries include a fractured pelvis, fractured vertebrae and a damaged aorta. He was transported following the accident to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Craft said rumors of Wiggins being paralyzed are not true. He also said Wiggins had been able to talk to nurses and investigators.
Craft said Mims was identified through city surveillance footage. Mims’ truck was identified on several cameras, and investigators pieced together footage to connect him to the hit-and-run, the chief said.
Both Mims’ truck and Wiggins’ bicycle are in police possession as evidence.
Ronnie Rozier II said he gets his hair cut often by Wiggins and described him as a well-liked, well-respected member of the community.
He said Wiggins has such a good reputation as a barber that it can take more than a week to schedule an appointment with him.
“Just great conversation with Curtis,” he said. “Very upbeat guy.”
