Leflore County turned up the heat on offense and defense as it cruised to a 50-0 win over visiting Humphreys County Friday night at Marcellus Singleton Stadium in Itta Bena.
The Tigers evened their record to 2-2 and go to Ruleville next week as they begin a stretch of three straight road games.
“The kids played hard and it just came together for us,” said Leflore head coach Eric House. “Our goal is to just get better each week.”
The Tigers held a slim 6-0 lead after the first frame as junior quarterback Maurice Edwards threw a 25-yard scoring strike to senior running back Willie McCline.
In the second period, Edwards took over with a pair of touchdown runs. The bruising 225-pounder ran in from six and five yards out and also had one 2-point conversion. McCline had a 2-point run on the second TD. Dekari Johnson, a freshman, scored from 15 yards out to give Leflore a 28-0 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Royce Jackson bolted in from eight yards out. Junior defensive tackle Emanuel Stanley picked up a fumble and scored from two yards away. Jackson had the 2-point run to give Leflore a 42-0 cushion headed to the fourth.
Kwalique Swinney caught a 30-yard pass from Edwards and Kerrick Ross had the 2-point run to end the scoring.
McCline finished with 210 yards on 17 carries, and Johnson had 75 yards on five tries. Edwards tacked on 40 yards on five totes, and Jackson had 23 yards on two carries.
Edwards was 5 of 8 for 135 yards with no interceptions. McCline had three grabs for 75 yards, and Swinney and Ryeshun Holston had a catch each for 30 yards.
Stanley led the defense with the fumble recovery and 10 tackles. Jackson had nine stops, an interception and a fumble recovery. Swinney finished with seven tackles.
n Carroll Academy 25, Newton 6 — Junior quarterback Morgan Mims broke loose offensively as he led the Rebels to a come-from-behind 25-6 win over Newton Academy Friday night in Decatur.
“It was a good physical game. We were very physical on defense. The defense was unbelievable,” said CA head coach Bo Milton.
Carroll (4-0) trailed 6-0 at the half as Newton scored on its second possession of the first quarter on a 95-yard run.
Mims got CA on the board with an 8-yard TD strike to Reese Fulton in the third period. The Rebels then scored 19 straight in the fourth period.
Mims scored on a 21-yard run to start things off and later ran in from 36 yards out to put Carroll up 18-6. Mims scored on a 58-yard run late in the fourth. Gavin Wiltshire booted the PAT.
Mims ran for 123 yards on 11 carries, was 1 of 5 for eight yards passing and caught a 20-yard pass from Logan Taylor.
Jeb Beck had 92 yards on 15 tries, and Hunter Brackin, who had five tackles, had 30 yards on nine carries.
Fulton, Taylor and Crawford Holly had five stops each.
Carroll starts District 1-AA play next week at Oak Hill.
n Amanda Elzy 12, MS Palmer 6 — Marquez Cary returned a fumble 38 yards for a touchdown in the fourth period to ignite the Panthers to a 12-6 win over the visiting Dragons Friday night at R.R. Pickett Field.
Senior quarterback Norman Polk scored on a 3-yard run in the first half for the Panthers.
Elzy (3-1) plays at Greenwood High next week.
n Union 30, J.Z. George 12 — The Jaguars’ woes continued as they dropped a 30-12 decision to Union High School Friday night.
With the loss, the Jags fall to 0-4 overall.

n Humphreys Academy 70, Delta Streets 18 — Playing without starters Emanuel (DJ) Alston and Cameron Ervin, the Lions were no match for the Rebels of Humphreys Academy Friday night in Belzoni.
Johnathan Brown played quarterback in place of Alston and threw TD passes of 80 and 46 yards to Jaylen Lewis. He also returned a kickoff 53 yards for a touchdown for DSA (2-2).
