The Pillow Academy Mustangs are feeling pretty good at 4-0, but Tripp McCarty served notice at practice Monday — there is still plenty of work left to do.
If the Mustangs are going to make a serious run at a state championship, they can’t rest on their laurels, even with a less-talented opponent coming in for homecoming. Kirk Academy (1-3) visits Bill Davis Field Friday night to tangle with undefeated Mustangs (4-0).
McCarty had his players go through Monday practice with pads on so some corrections from the 41-7 win over Washington School could be made.
“We had some pass protection things raise their head, technique and scheme wise, for our linemen as well as our backs. We will get that worked out for sure,” said the PA head coach. “We gave up our first sack of the season last week, and I am not happy about that.”
Pillow has been quite dominant in its first four games — outscoring opponents 164-28.
And with the possibility of a matchup between what will likey be two undefeated teams looming next week with Heritage Academy, will the Mustangs get caught looking ahead to the Patriots?
“Our kids are smart. They know what’s coming up, but if they are real smart, they won’t look past a Kirk team that is coming off its first win and looked good doing so,” McCarty said.
Kirk ended an 11-game losing skid last Friday with a 28-22 decision over Marshall Academy. The Raiders, who haven’t had a winning season since 2008, were outscored by a combined 88-20 in the first three games.
Pillow won last year’s meeting with Kirk, 64-0.
PA senior wideout Jaden Simcox broke the school’s all-time career receiving mark last week with a nine-catch, 63-yard performance. He now has 15 catches for 250 yards — giving him 1,532 career receiving yards at the school.
