Greenwood’s Marquiss Spencer appears fully ready to be a solid pass rushing threat for the Mississippi State football team this season.
The Bulldogs are going to be stout up front, and Spencer is going to help reinforce that.
Last Saturday in the Maroon and White game, Spencer caused plenty of pressure on Keytaon Thompson and the rest of Mississippi State’s offense. Spencer recorded 2.5 tackles for loss as well as a sack.
If the 6-foot-4, 285-pound sophomore out of Greenwood High School can translate this sort of performance and effort into the fall, the Bulldogs will have a multitude of proven threats on the front seven.
This spring Spencer moved from outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme to defensive end in Bob Shoop’s new 4-3 look.
Gerri Green and Montez Sweat made the move as well. Those two are listed as starters, but Spencer will also get plenty of chances to make plays for the Bulldogs.
As a sophomore last year, Spencer had 21 tackles, including 4.5 stops for loss and one quarterback sack.
During his senior campaign at Greenwood, Spencer totaled 145 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 21 sacks in a 12-2 season that ended with a loss in the state semifinals.
