The Lady Mustangs of Pillow Academy kept their perfect season intact Tuesday by holding off a third-quarter charge from homestanding Starkville Academy.
The PA girls are now 13-0 after winning 66-44 to finish off the season sweep of Starkville.
The Lady Mustangs held a 34-25 lead at halftime and stretched the margin to 44-32 with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter. But thanks to a 3-pointer followed by a pair free throws, the Lady Vols (10-6) pulled within eight points at 44-36.
Pillow turned a 48-38 advantage at the end of the third quarter into 64-40 and took control in the fourth quarter with a 16-2 run.
Sophomore Kaylee Jones paced Pillow with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Madeline Mattox chipped in with 15 points, while senior Jane Rob Pannell added 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Lillee Alpe led the Lady Vols with 14 points.
In the boys game, Starkville used the 3-ball to overcome a sluggish start and earn a 60-54 win over the Mustangs.
PA outscored the home team 21-11 in the fourth period to make a run, but the Mustangs were unable to complete the comeback. After trailing by as many as 17 points, the Mustangs fought back, thanks to some turnovers they forced on the defensive end.
Senior Breck Bolin led the Mustangs (3-7) with 15 points, followed by Shane Houston Stephens with 11 and Jack Reichle with 10.
In junior high action, the PA girls continued their winning ways with a 56-21 rout of Starkville to move to 11-0.
Sarah Presley Howard pumped in a game-high 18 points and came away with seven steals. Georgia Caroline Self added eight points.
The PA boys lost 42-27 as Nelson Hodges had a team-high 11 points.
n Carroll Academy: The Rebels went over the 70-point mark for the second straight game as they beat Winona Christian School 71-35 Tuesday night in Winona.
The Rebels (6-5), winners in three of their last four games, only led 17-14 after the first period and 28-15 at the half. However, Carroll outscored the Stars 19-9 in the third for a 47-24 lead headed to the fourth period where the Rebels held a 24-11 advantage.
Reese Fulton led CA with 18 points and 17 boards. Logan Taylor notched 16 points, and Austin Smith had 15. Brett Harper tacked on 13 points.
The Lady Rebels got 20 points from Sandy Rhea Tackett in slipping past Winona 44-39.
The Lady Stars led 21-17 at the half and 28-23 after the third frame but a 21-11 run in the fourth gave the Lady Rebels the win.
Tackett also had eight boards and five steals for CA (8-8). Gracie Turner had seven points and 12 rebounds, and Belle Sanders had seven points. Lainey Claire Dunn had six boards and four steals.
Carroll is at Central Holmes Friday.
