GREENVILLE — The Pillow Academy tennis team moved to a perfect 5-0 on the season with a 6-3 thrashing of archrival Washington School here Tuesday.
“All around we had a great team win against Washington today,” PA second-year coach Holly Ann Singh said. “All of the girls were focused and ready today, and it definitely showed in the scores.”
Pillow’s No. 1 girls singles senior standout Maggie Taylor defeated Washington’s Kathleen Tucker 6-0, 6-0. Dia Chawla won over Mary Glenn Hooker 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.
Pillow’s No. 1 girls doubles duo Mari-Brian Crick and Madison Jefcoat defeated Molly Williams and Leanor Warrington 6-3, 6-0, while Anne Craig Melton and Elizabeth Powers completed the girls sweep for Pillow with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mia Morgan and Ava Fratesi.
The Pillow boys doubles teams and mixed doubles lost all of their matches to Washington. Smith Lyon and Cole Tyler lost 6-7(6), 3-6 to John Martin Walker and John Bentley Suares. The Pillow No. 2 duo of Floyd Melton IV and Jeff Jackson lost to Farel Hathaway and Conner Janous 6-0, 6-0. John Hollis Tackett and Julia Love Lyon lost to Washington’s Lizzie Skelton and Michael Tucker 6-3, 6-3.
“Our boys doubles teams definitely ran into their most fierce competition today, and coach Chuck (Brown) and I saw what we need to work on the have them ready,” Singh said.
Pillow’s state singles champions Brady McDaniel and Sunjay Chawla made easy work of their competition. McDaniel defeated Paul Horn 6-0, 6-0, and Chawla defeated Landon Azlin 6-0, 6-1.
The Mustangs look to continue their perfect season next week when they travel to Senatobia to play Magnolia Heights in conference play on Thursday.
Matches will begin at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Northwest Community College.
Pillow defeated Magnolia Heights 9-0 earlier this year.
