New Pillow Academy head coach Tripp McCarty loves to practice at a fast pace.
But he hasn’t been able to roll along like he would like so far in spring practice because the coaching staff is working really hard on teaching fundamentals.
The Mustangs hit the practice field three times last week and will finish out spring this week with two or three more workouts.
“Before we can raise expectations for our program, we want to raise expectations in practice,” said McCarty, who takes over a once-proud program that has suffered through three straight losing seasons. “Our goal is to become the best practice team in the nation.
“We hit a lot of fundamentals so far so we haven’t been able to cut loose and roll like we eventually will in practice.”
McCarty is working with 39 kids since he now has six or seven new faces out for football.
“We’re excited about getting some kids out. Offensively, none of them are behind because everyone is learning a new way of doing things,” said the former Brookhaven Academy coach. “I have been real pleased with the seniors and how they are buying in and leading the other guys.
“And I also have to brag on our coaches. I really like the energy they are coaching with.”
