Battling cold and wet conditions, the Pillow Academy golf team opened the season Monday with a one-stroke victory.
Pillow finished with a team score of 324, one better than Oak Hill, to win at Elm Lake Golf Club in Columbus.
Host team Heritage Academy finished four shots back.
“I have to give credit to all the kids that played. This may have been the coldest day we’ve ever played with wind chills in the low 30s for the entire round,” PA coach Randy Bensley said. “I'm really proud of how our kids played.”
Kathleen Gallagher posted the low round for PA with a solid 76 — good enough for an overall second-place finish in the nine-team tournament.
Cooper Dunn finished in a tie for fourth with a 79. They were followed by Steve Pannell (84), Brandon Schroeder (85), Sam Henry Farmer (85) and Raines Cook (101).
“This gives me reason to be excited about our upcoming season. I knew we would be pretty strong in our top spots, but seeing another three players play good competitive rounds today this early in our season is a good sign,” Bensley said.
The Pillow B-team finished seventh as it was led by Dillon Ussery’s 83.
There other scores include: Madison Deloach (97), Haynes Camp (99), James Howard Alderman (99) and April Leonard (102).
The other team scores were: Starkville (347), Lamar (360), Washington (364), New Hope (381), Calhoun Academy (421) and Heritage B (432).
