GREENVILLE — The Pillow Academy golf team just missed opening the season with back-to-back wins.
PA lost in a sudden-death playoff with Starkville Academy here Monday at the Greenville Country Club to finish second in a tournament hosted by Washington School.
Pillow and Starkville finished with overall scores of 329.
PA coach Randy Bensley said his team missed some opportunities to close things out in regulation and that trend continued into the playoff — where some missed short putts on the first extra hole allowed Starkville to stay alive.
The Volunteers then beat the Mustangs on the second playoff hole with four pars.
Pillow junior Kathleen Gallagher was the medalist for the tournament with the lowest score of the more than 70 golfers in the event with a 4-over-par 76.
“I’m very proud of how Kathleen put together a solid round that included 14 pars and four bogeys,” Bensley said. “The other players battled all day but really struggled with scoring and didn’t take advantage of some opportunities.”
The Pillow B-team finished in sixth place in the seven-team event. James Howard Alderman posted PA’s lowest score with a 91.
