Pillow Academy’s fastpitch softball team lost a heartbreaker Monday to Central Holmes Christian in Lexington.
With scored tied at 2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Central Holmes’ Morgan Bigbee singled on a 3-1 count to score two runs — giving her team the walk-off victory.
In the top of the sixth inning, Pillow tied things up at 2-all.. Austin Alex Mitchell drove in one when she singled.
Mari Wilson Spruill took the loss. She went 61/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out two.
Allie Beck had a double. Madison Jefcoat and Mitchell had PA’s only other hits in the contest.
Central Holmes tallied nine hits.
Pillow went 3-1 over the weekend in the Bayou Academy Tournament in Cleveland.
The Lady Mustangs (8-2-1) opened with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Magnolia Heights.
Both teams were strong on the rubber. Spruill allowed just three hits over five innings while striking out two.
Magnolia Heights scored in the first inning on an error.
Pillow pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. Sara Beth Steen was struck by a pitch, driving in a run. Avery Howard doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.
Beck went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Pillow. Avery Howard had a double and two RBIs.
Anna Taylor Hudson had a hit as did Austin Alex Mitchell and Marklane Scates.
In the second game, PA seized a 3-2 victory against Adams Christian in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a single by Hudson.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Jefcoat struck out two.
Adams Christian got things going in the first inning, when an error scored two runs. But the Lady Mustangs battled back.
Hudson led Pillow with two hits in three at-bats. Howard ripped a double, and Beck added a single.
The lone loss Saturday came in a 6-2 decision to Leake as PA managed just four hits in five innings.
Jefcoat had a double, while Scates, Steen and Madeline Mattox added singles.
Jefcoat took the loss in the circle, allowing six earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
