Offensive and defensive players stood out for six Greenwood-area schools in games played last Thursday and Friday.
Four players — two each on offense and defense — have been selected as the Commonwealth’s Players of the Week for their performances.
Chosen on offense are Pillow Academy’s Jack Reichle and Leflore County’s Maurice Edwards.
Reichle, a senior running back and defensive back, contributed on both sides of the ball for the Mustangs in their 42-21 win over Magnolia Heights Friday night. He ran for 64 yards on seven carries, scoring two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown, and he made five tackles on defense.
Pillow, 7-2 overall and 3-1 in District 1-5A, closes out the regular season Friday at league foe Bayou Academy.
Edwards, a senior running back/defensive tackle, had a similar game to Reichle. Edwards, a 285-pounder, ran only eight times, but scored three touchdowns and had 55 yards in the Tigers’ 28-0 victory over Coffeeville in a Region 3-1A contest. He also chipped in on defense with six tackles and two quarterback sacks.
Leflore, 5-3 overall and winners of five straight, is 5-1 in region play and visits Ray Brooks Friday night.
Selected on defense as players of the week are Pillow’s Seth Hollis and J.Z. George’s D’Anthony McGlothan.
Hollis, a senior linebacker, recorded four solo stops and assisted on 11 others in the Pillow conference win. McGlothan, a sophomore free safety, has become a tackling machine for the Jaguars as he had 13 solo stops and five assists in a 17-16 loss to Eupora. He also had a fumble recovery and returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. He then tacked on the 2-point conversion.
J.Z. George, 3-6 overall and 0-2 in Region 2-2A, plays at Bruce Friday night.
Offensive honorable mentions go to Pillow’s Jaden Simcox and Shane Houston Stephens, Delta Streets’ Jalyn Lewis and Jaylen Prayer, Amanda Elzy’s Dephabian Fant and Ladarius Davenport, and Carroll Academy’s Morgan Mims.
Defensive honorable mentions go to Pillow’s Christian Belk and Nolan Marshall, Elzy’s La’Andre Pittman and Smitdarius Wright, Leflore’s Emanuel Stanley and Ivory Lampkin Jr., Carroll’s Cooper Beck and Logan Taylor, and J.Z. George’s Wil’tavious Williams.
